Rickets is a childhood disease that’s caused by a prolonged deficiency of Vitamin D. We don’t like rickets. It softens and weakens bones. In the 1930s, there was a rickets epidemic that primarily affected children from lower-income families in U.S. cities. An innovative solution, which still exists, was to fortify milk with Vitamin D. This was ingenious for three reasons. First, it’s compatible. Children drink a lot of milk. Second, it’s scalable. A lot of children drink milk. And third, it’s inexpensive. The distribution channel for milk already existed.
Changemakers often take this same kind of fortification approach when looking for ways to support people. They fortify everyday activities with changemaking activities for the same three reasons that fortifying milk with Vitamin D is so smart.
But there are two wonderful differences. First, Vitamin D doesn’t make milk taste better, whereas adding a focus on changemaking brings visible new meaning and joy to everyday activities. And second, fortifying milk with Vitamin D does one thing. It prevents a problem. Fortifying everyday activities with changemaking can be about so much more. It can be structured to help people prevent problems and cope with challenges. It can include models to help people build new skill sets and mindsets. And, it helps people build deep, powerful, and purpose-driven relationships.
